We have someone wanting to buy a vehicle from us and they live far away. They have suggested they come to visit, pay by personal cheque and take the vehicle away on the same day.

The value of the cheque would be quite a few thousand euros and we are a bit concerned about this.

I know French cheques are seen as cash and penalties are given if you write one that can't be covered but what about the seller? If his cheque does bounce what happens and where do we stand with him taking the vehicle already.

Any clarification, advice or personal experience would be welcome via the forum or PM.

If you take the cheque and give them the car then you have lost the car, if the cheque does not clear. You want a bank certified cheque and verify its genuine.

If they are genuine they will understand.

i sold my horse trailer and they payed by cheque which was abit scary as it was for almost 3000e i took down their car reg number and i got them to allow my to copy their identifaction document (same as our passport ) or you could ask for a bank mandate cheque which is the same as cash the only prob with these is they my think its a scam

If they give the required few days notice they can get the cash from their own bank and bring it with them, at their own risk.

Just bear in mind that if the transaction exceeds €3000 it is illegal to pay cash.
